Speaking Engagements in 2022

If you are reading this, I want to sincerely thank you for visiting my personal website and read my blogposts. Unfortunately, I have neglected the blog section of my website. Like many others, I substituted posting here by posting on my social media channels. The last year I have enjoyed LinkedIn the most and have been posting there almost daily. Including my book reviews. In case you like that kind of content from me, please connect with me on LinkedIn:

But I do not want to give up on my personal website and blog. In all my independent consultancy work that I do for other brands and companies I keep on emphasizing that it is so important the be digitally independent. Do not rely on any third-party platform. Remember that they own your content and ‘customers’. Your friends and followers on the social media networks are friends and followers on lease. They are not yours; they are the network’s connections. Therefore, I have decided to publish this post today:

Usually, I post here about my activities and things that interest me. We are finally leaving COVID-19 behind us and we are going back to the old normal from the new normal. This means physical trade fairs, summits, conferences, guest lectures, fora, and events. YEAH! So, I have been booked for three fun occasions in 2022:

May 2022: Guest Lecturer at EBS / CREA in Geneva, Switzerland. For the third time I have been invited by leading Swiss business school EBS to teach a course as a guest lecturer to their Masters students of the International Luxury Management course. I love working with students as it is so gratifying to share knowledge, but equally fun to learn from the young critical thinkers. For more info, visit the EBS website.

June 2022: Public speaking engagement at eCommerce Trade Fair. For the 4th time I have been invited to speak during the Webwinkel Vakdagen, the leading Dutch trade fair for the eCommerce industry. I have attended the first edition of this fair fifteen years ago and have visited every year. It’s amazing to see how it grew from one little room into a massive fair. I am very humbled to be invited every time to speak at this event and get a lot of energy from the room and the visitors. I love the interaction during the lecture with the room, but also afterwards during the one-on-one when visitors come up to me to ask specific questions and advice. For more info about my presentation, please visit my page on their official website HERE.

September 2022: Public speaking engagement at "What's going on in [R]etailing?! 2022" in Maarssen, the Netherlands. The title of my presentation is: “Hoe een klassieke juwelier de (r)etail ervaring online net zo persoonlijk maakt als in de winkel sinds 2007” which translates into: "How a traditional jeweller made it's online retail experience as person as they do in-store since 2007"). You can read more about my presentation on the page dedicated to my presentation on the official site HERE.

Hope to see you at one of these events. Please touch base with me beforehand and/or during the event. I love meeting new people, sharing knowledge and learn new things.

Clubhouse App - what is it and first experiences

Intro

Lately the app clubhouse is getting a lot of attention and traction. Yesterday I download the Clubhouse app on my iPhone and started to explore. I joined a room with my old uni buddy Tjalling Dijkstra and his friend Steven Broghouts called "Welcome Steven". All three of us were new on the platform and started chatting freely. This chat took more than 2 hours.

First experiences

Suddenly my buddy Bas Smit, whom actually approved my request to join Clubhouse, jumped into the room. As he is rather known in the Netherlands, he had a rather big following join him as well. Suddenly the group grew to 50+. We started chatting away and gradually the room grew to 150+ people and the group discussion group to over 10 speakers. We discussed a big array of topics, but the red thread was that we had great fun, joking around and sharing quite some knowledge. Topics like social media, content creating, fashion, entrepreneurship, gaming and many more were discussed. The beauty was though, that everyone was very much giving back and trying to help one another.

So, what is Clubhouse?

The official description is: "Clubhouse is a new type of social network based on voice—where people around the world come together to talk, listen and learn from each other in real-time."

My definition is: an app with chat rooms, where do you not type but talk. And, you can compare it to a conference call where everyone can eavesdrop.  But, it's more, you can compare it to a conference. You can have one person on stage and a huge crowd listening. It can be a panel discussion with multiple people on stage and taking questions from the crowd. It can also be a group discussion of peers with equal rights and speaking time.

Will it kill podcasting?

I do not think Clubhouse will kill podcasting, I do not even see it as a subtitute, but complementary to it.  So, why does it get so much traction I hear your asking? Firstly, because I think people during these weird COVID-19 times and lockdowns cravey human interaction. Obviously voice is better than text and voice only is less confronting than video calls. It is like podcasting a create medium to share knowledge, but where podcasts lack interaction, Clubhouse is all about interaction with the crowd. I would really call it a summit/conference/get-together on your phone.

How does the Clubhouse app work?

For now it is only available for iPhone and by invitation only. The founders want the platform to grow gradually and in a qualitative manner. You have to register with your mobile phone number. You can link your Twitter and Instagram handle. You can choose your own handle, but always have to enter your real first and last name. The bio can be as long or short as you want. Tip: be creative, use enters & emoticons. You can't chat in the app. You can follow others. You can create rooms and discuss any topic you want. You can stream real-time and plan one ahead. While you listen you can navigate within the app, but also on your phone using other apps. It works also very good on your carkit.

Next steps

After a very cool experience last night I logged in the Clubhouse app this morning to see how much traffic there was in the morning and engagement. The funny thing was I joined a Dutch group with a fellow Clubhouser from last night, had a quick chat and left as I was about to get into my first meeting of the day. Later on the day I logged on again and found some new groups, hosted by other Clubhouser that were part of our group last night and got inspired to share knowledge about the app and their journey to become an entrepreneur.

I am planning to experiment with setting up a few rooms on the Clubhouse app soon. I was thinking of setting up the following rooms evolving around these topics:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Talking Wristwatches
  • Designing Jewelry
  • Diamond Industry
  • Giving back to the community

I would love to hear your experiences with the Clubhouse app and/or what rooms you would like me to set up. And, if there is someone that wishes to team up and create a room together, please send me a message.

Have an awesome day!

30th column for trade magazine De Juwelier – Droom van elke juwelier

Have you ever heard of Goro's, which is founded by Goro Takahashi in Tokyo? Well, his career path is every jeweller's dream. I have decided to write my 30th and last column in 2019 to write abou his journey as jewelry maker. You can find every single article in PDF format on the Oak Consultancy page.

In this colum for Dutch trade magazine De Juwelier I share critical success factors for the jewelry brand Goro's.

Magazine got launched 1 December 2019 in physical format and this is the text in Dutch:

30th column for trade magazine De Juwelier - Droom van elke juwelier

Goro zelf overleed in 2013.

  2. Eenmaal ingeloot, krijg men een cijfer.

First column for 00/24 Horloges Magazine - Hebben juweliers nog bestaansrecht?

The Dutch watch magazine 00/24 Horloges also known as WatchWorld has asked me to write a column for the consumer magazine. I kicked off with a bold title: "Hebben juweliers nog bestaanrecht?" which translates into: "Do jewellers still have right of existance?". After I have written over 34 columns for a B2B target group, this is my first column that is meant for consumers (B2C). Obviously you can guess what the conclusion is of my column 😉

To download the PDF, please click here.
This issue got launched 3 Decemer 2019 in physical format and this is the text in Dutch:

First column for 0024 Horloges Magazine

“Hebben juweliers nog bestaansrecht?”

Horloges koopt men bij een juwelier. Klinkt logisch toch?
